Here in Canterbury we have the foundations and framework for a strong and cohesive health system that will serve our people well through to 2030 and beyond. To realise the full potential of our system we must develop and support our current and future leaders. Leadership can take many forms, and is not simply for those in positions of authority. Anybody can be a leader in both their personal and professional lives by applying the 4QL principles and lessons from the course. Canterbury DHB has been proud to sponsor the 4QL leadership course for over 250 participants from throughout our local health system, and to provide this website with resources for 4QL graduates. Thank you for being part of the team that’s leading health care innovation and quality in Canterbury.
David Meates, CEO, Canterbury DHB
My gratitude to David Meates, a distinguished leader, to members of his executive group and to the superb Canterbury Initiative team for inviting me to share Four Quadrant Leadership seminars with highly skilled professionals who are assisting thousands of people to achieve and maintain bodily, psychological and behavioural health. During the courses, all participants described their best and worst leaders and discussed my conclusions about the relationships and techniques demonstrated by genuine leaders – at work, home and elsewhere.Their responses confirmed the conclusions about leadership that are summarised in the relationships and techniques I have called Four Quadrant Leadership. That system is based on my sixty years of research into the behaviour of numerous leaders, from many societies and occupations, during the past three thousand years. I hope that the information presented in this web site will assist you to extend and strengthen your ability to understand and lead others – and yourself. Remember, leaders are made, not born.
